Understanding Apple’s New Stolen Device Protection

Protecting personal and financial data has never been more crucial.

This is highlighted in a recent update from Apple, as detailed in an insightful article from The Wall Street Journal. With the iOS 17.3 update, Apple introduces a new feature: Stolen Device Protection. This addition to iPhone security measures follows a yearlong investigation by The Wall Street Journal into the rising issue of iPhone thefts nationwide.

Why is this update significant?

Previously, thieves could easily misuse a stolen iPhone and its passcode to wreak havoc on the owner's digital and financial life. They could lock victims out of their Apple accounts, access bank accounts, and even open new credit cards. Stolen Device Protection aims to mitigate these risks.

How does stolen device protection work?

This new feature adds layers of security, especially when the iPhone is away from familiar locations like home or work. If a thief tries to change sensitive settings or access secure information at an unfamiliar location, the iPhone will require additional steps, including biometric verification (Face ID or Touch ID) and a one-hour delay, followed by another biometric scan.

What's the process for setting up Stolen Device Protection?

To utilize this feature, users must enable it in the settings. It's found under Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Stolen Device Protection. However, it requires two-factor authentication and Find My to be enabled on your Apple ID account.

Are there any limitations or considerations?

While Stolen Device Protection significantly enhances security, it's not foolproof. For instance, it doesn't protect against access to email and other apps that don't fall under Apple's security measures. Also, if the phone’s biometric scanners are damaged, accessing protected features could be challenging when away from familiar locations.

Apple's Stolen Device Protection is a significant step towards enhancing personal digital security. While it's not a complete solution to all security threats, it certainly provides a robust defense against the common vulnerabilities exploited in iPhone thefts.
